After qualifying with a law degree at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Jonathan spent 12 years in a legal practice, the last eight years of which were as a partner. During that period he also completed a Masters Degree in Commercial Law.
In 1989 Jonathan emigrated to Melbourne where he joined a national legal firm and in 1991 was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
Having experienced legal practice in Australia for 3 years, Jonathan decided it was time to venture into the commercial world. In 1992 together with a joint-venture partner he established, owned and operated under management several food outlets – food court and café style – in major shopping centres and also in other locations around Melbourne.
In 2006 Jonathan decided to utilise the experience he acquired as a lawyer and in the hospitality industry to specialise in those aspects of law involving the hospitality industry. He is a contributor to the Eldred Hospitality E-Newsletter and also FoodService magazine for which he writes on legal issues in the hospitality industry. Jonathan is a consultant solicitor and if so required is available to consult at the offices of Eldred Hospitality or at the client’s premises.
Having been through the process of growing a hospitality business from its early stages, Jonathan has the ability to anticipate the issues that will confront his clients in similar circumstances.
Drawing on his experience and interpersonal skills he is able to develop strong relationships with clients and provide commercial legal advice to those in the hospitality industry.
Jonathan is married, has two adult children and is a keen golfer.
